The virus that causes AIDS can be treated, but too many people in the U.S. don’t know they have the infection. That also makes it more likely they will pass it along to others.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says:

  • Some 1.2 million people are living with HIV.

  • Nearly 50,000 new cases are diagnosed every year.

June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. Health care communicators at hospitals and clinics around the U.S. are working to educate people who may be susceptible to the disease. This infographic says those at risk include:

  • Men who have sex with men

  • Intravenous drug users

  • Women with at-risk behavior who breastfeed their children

  • Black men and women, with the latter group constituting a majority of all HIV-infected females.

Also, the CDC has numerous resources for communicators to promote HIV testing.
